It all began when two monkeys got together and talked about changing the world of publishing. They had a lot of the same ideas, and they had a lot of the tools they needed but neither had all the pieces to make the type of splash they hoped for.

The two monkeys started sharing their thoughts. For months they made lists and graphs. They drew pictures of what a collaboration would look like. They planned what things they could do to help others along the path of words. The two monkeys had different talents and resources, but they had the same vision: to amplify quiet voices to be heard around the world.

After a lot of thinking, the two monkeys came together and became YurikoPai, a small but innovative press designed to create a new publishing paradigm. Agile and efficient, YurikoPai benefits from a lean and focused staff. What they lack in size they make up for in talent. Populated by an award-winning and diverse staff, the company seeks to be an example of equitable and sustainable publishing.

The two monkeys are Angela Yuriko Smith and Frances Lu-Pai Ippolito, both born in the Year of the Monkey from the Chinese zodiac. Monkeys are known as clever and sociable animals that tend to see things in a different light, and Frances and Angela hope to model their press with the same qualities: agility, cleverness and a recognition that we are stronger together.

We hope you will join our monchu, a family collected from creators, readers and writers. We are connected with a passion for story in all the ways it can be presented. We are connected with a passion for our stories—from those who have been underrepresented, undervalued and overlooked. This is YurikoPai—bringing marginalized voices to the center of the page.
