Yuriko, like most names, can mean many different things. The usage depends on the connections, circumstances and current environment. Written as 百合子 it means simply ‘lily child’. Different, 佑里子 means ‘helpful child of a good place.’ 祐里子 specifies divine help.

Yuriko Publishing also hopes to be many different things, depending on the connections, circumstances and current environment. To writers, we hope to be a support system. We are small enough to be in the same boat, paddling together. To readers, we hope to be a portal to Otherness where they can not only discover divergent voices, but find a community where different is the normal. For everyone, we hope to be a space where anything that can be conceived can become reality.

To us, Yuriko means representation. It’s the name of Yuriko Kayoda, grandmother to Angela Yuriko Smith. Growing up, her birth name was a mark of shame and she made her granddaughter promise not to carry that name forward to her descendents. Yuriko Publishing is named for this small Shimanchu-American woman. We seek to be a publishing company that honors true names and true selves.

"We hope you will join our monchu, a family collected from creators, readers and writers."

Yuriko Publishing is a small but innovative press designed to create a new publishing paradigm. Agile and efficient, we benefit from a lean and focused staff. What we lack in size we make up for in talent. Populated by an award-winning and diverse staff, Yuriko Publishing seeks to be an example of equitable and sustainable publishing.

We hope you will join our monchu, a family collected from creators, readers and writers. We are connected with a passion for story in all the ways it can be presented. We are connected with a passion for our stories—from those who have been underrepresented, undervalued and overlooked. This is Yuriko Publishing—bringing marginalized voices to the center of the page.
